My Day

I love it when you are able to think about all of the high points of your day when you are in a bad mood. In a day you always want something to look forward to in that day. What I look forward to is either basketball practice or basketball games.

I look forward to practice because I love the game. I would play it everyday if I could, and practice gives me the chance to show my talents to my teammates and my coaches. I look forward to the games because I get a chance to watch the older players and learn from what they do very well and what they do wrong. I also look forward to the dinner on the bus after the games. Sometimes it's Subway, Dominoes, or if we are lucky then we get Chick-fil-a.

Writing Center

The Writing Center was an experience that helped me a little. There was some aspects of the Writing Center that are good but there are others that aren't good. What I like about the writing center is how you were able to get help on a question that you had from a student's perspective. What I don't like about the Writing Center is how the idea of it is so you can get help from students so you will be more comfortable, but in reality you are just as uncomfortable if not more by going to get help from a student that you don't know.

The dance concert is one of the most hectic times of dance class. The dance concert is this wednesday at 7. I have had to go to a lot of practices to prepare for it. I have had to miss some things because I have to go to the rehearsal. I have had to miss half a practice and on tuesday I will have to miss an entire practice. I think this will all pay off and the dance concert will be a big hit.

Prompt

Prompt: What would you do if you were in Ralph's position as the leader? Would you want the role as leader? Explain.

If I was in this situation I would first choose somebody to be a leader along with me. I would do this because I would be under too much pressure being the only person everybody looked up at. Once that is done I would give people shifts between hunting, exploring, and watching the first graders. This way people can't complain about having unfair jobs.

The biggest struggle of being leader would be having all of the fingers pointed at you if something goes wrong, but if something goes good then you would be applauded. I would want this position because if I had something to say I could say it and people would listen. I would love to get the respect.

Last week on wednesday I had my first experience playing in a high school basketball game. We traveled all the way out to Denham Springs. What was scheduled was a scrimmage between Episcopal, Denham Springs, and Northshore. Going to the scrimmage I didn't know what to expect.

When we got there I found out that there was a lot of freshman duties that had to be taken care of. We had to take film of the game while keeping track of all the stats that were being made for us. Then after 4 games of taking stats the JV game came. I came off the bench with 7 minutes left and never came out again. The high school game is a lot faster than the middle school game. I finished with 2 points and had a great experience.

Deserted Island

I thought the simulation went ok. I felt like too many people were giving ideas and trying to take control. When people would try to be a leader they would be shunned and other people would try to be the leader. I think that we also forgot about the first graders that were supposed to be with us.

In real life I think that we would all die within a week. I think this because all of us would be in so much shock that we wouldn't be able to think or move. The class did a good job of making a plan, but it took to much time because so many people were talking.

Basketball practice has been going well over the past two weeks. Coach is saying that we are practicing very hard, but I don't feel like I am playing to my best ability. We have done many drills that involve shooting. I love it when we do shooting drills because it gives me an opportunity to improve my jump shot. We have also worked on defense. To me this is one of my weakest points of my game, but I feel like I am improving. The thing that I am most proud of is the shape I am in. I am not in the best shape of my life, but I haven't been in good shape in maybe two years.

Reading Response

I read The Sniper By Liam O'Flaherty. I enjoyed this story because the story was about something that I was interested in. The story is about a sniper in a civil war that is trying to kill the other sniper with other obstacles going on around him. All guns are pointed at him, but he is able to pul through.

My Short Story Plot

My story is about a man who is challenged to do the gallon challenge. The gallon challenge is when you drink an entire gallon of milk in one sitting. My character accepts the challenge and spends an entire day training for the gallon challenge. I think I am going to use some of the plot devices we learned in class, but I don't know what I am going to use.

The rising action will be when my character will be challenged by the campers across the lake. I haven't figured out what my climax will be, but I think it might happen while he is training for the challenge. The falling action will be when it is time to complete the gallon challenge, and starts drinking the milk and then throws up from all the milk in his body, but still keeps drinking. The resolution will be when he decides that he can't finish the challenge, but then his dad, who he hasn't seen sense he was twelve will show up and finish the challenge for him. The morale of the story is that you should always help somebody when they are in the time of need.

Short Stories Review

The short stories we have read have been great in some part, but awful in the others. They are good because it helps understand reading that we don't see everyday. When we go over the stories in class it helps a lot when I didn't understand the story before.

Some things I do not like about the stories is that we have to annotate them in a certain way. I understand why we have to annotate them, but it bothers me when we have to annotate a certain way and I don't know how to annotate in that way. Another thing that bothers me is that we have to read a different story every night, if we read one story every other night, but then read a story in class the next day that would ease off the workload a little bit. Overall I am not a big fan of the short stories, but I hope that I will come to want to read them.

My Short Story

Hi my name is Barney Ed Canson. I am 22 years old and I live on a lake. Across the lake there is camp currently going on. I went for my daily swim of 10 laps around the lake, which adds up to around 30 miles, but that was just a warm up.

On my last lap a couple of little campers stopped me. They tried poking me but I couldn't feel it because my body was so numb from being in the water so long. They finally got my attention and challenged me. They challenged me to the gallon challenge. I proudly accepted the invitation, and was going to get ready for a hard day of training, so I can do the challenge successfully.

Short Stories

I enjoy the short stories to a degree. They can be very creative and fun to read, when you know what the writer is saying. In every short story we have read so far I have not understood. I would have to read each paragraph maybe three or four times.

Once I go back over my annotations I can understand the reading a little better, but when I really start understanding the reading is when we go over it in class. When we do this all of the points that I never thought of get pointed out. I really think going over the stories in class help a lot.

Literacy Narrative

I feel like my narrative is very easy to understand once you start reading it. I don't need to take away anything from my narrative. It would be cool to add the picture of my book to it or a link to a website where you can buy the book. I have used Wordle before and I liked it a lot, I think it would be great o add in the narrative.

Reading Response 5

I have finished catching fire. It was a great book. However I really don't like how it ended in a cliff hanger. Now I have to get Mockingbird and read that so I can get the full story.

I still think the first book was a lot better because it had more action to me. However Catching Fire had great parts to it like the twists it has about Katniss going back to the hunger games.

Interview Dialogue

Neil Everette is interviewing Zach Mettenburger on his game against University of Alabama-Birmingham.

"Zach, How does it feel to break an LSU record for most touchdown passes?" asked Everette

"It feels great, I couldn't have done it without the help of Cam Cameron. He put more confidence in me."

"How do you feel about the play of Odell Beckam Jr.?" said Everette

"I have to take credit for his performance. Without me he would never have had a game like that because I am the best quarterback in the SEC." snarked Mettenburger

"Thats all the questions I have, good luck this season." Everette said.

Mettenburger replied "I'm too good for luck."

Literacy Narrative

My literacy narrative is my grandfather impacting the way I look at LSU. So far I have completed my first draft, and I think it is okay. I think I can improve on it a lot.

I have touched up on my first draft a little bit, but I am going to do some major editing for my second draft. I like this assignment because it helps you realize how important reading and writing is and how it can affect your life.

I Have a Dream

The "I Have a Dream" speech was given by Martin Luther King Jr. on August 28, 1963. This speech was given in Washington D.C. while the march on Washington happened. The amazing part about that day was even though he was talking about black rights, white people were there. This is an example of what life should be today. We are all brother and sisters.

The speech itself is considered one of the greatest speeches of all time. To me this speech sums up the whole meaning of peace. What I got from this speech was that we should not be fighting amongst each other, but giving each other a hand when we fall down.

Reading Response 3

The first part of Catching Fire was great. I could not stop reading because so many unexpecting thing happened. The most unexpecting part of the book so far is Katniss' mind set while she is going back to the hunger games. She thinks that she will not survive because it is her fate to die in the arena.

Now Katniss goes to the hunger games. Something is very different about the hunger games this time. Katniss finds out that there is a way to get out of the arena. Now she is trying to figure out how to escape the hunger games arena.

Bocage Trip

On Sunday nothing was happening that was out of the ordinary. I mowed the grass, took a shower, then started homework. Then my dad said that we are going to bocage. I was a little hesitant to accept the invitation because it was Sunday and I thought nobody would be there. I decided to go because anything is better than doing your homework.

We arrive to bocage we drop Mary off at Cotillion then go to the pool. My guess was correct nobody was at the pool. Thankfully the Saints game was on, so me and my dad watched the Saints game while my little sister swam in the pool by herself. It turned out to be a good decision to go to the pool because when we left we got ice cream.

Reading Response 2

Currently I am reading Catching Fire. Catching Fire is the second book in The Hunger Games series. I wanted to start reading this book because the movie is coming out soon, so I thought it would be cool to be able to watch the movie and see how different it was from the book.

My question for this book is, Will Catching Fire be as thrilling as The Hunger Games? I think that this question will be answered very soon because they already did something in the book that got me really involved. If something exciting happens this early in the book then the rest of the book must be amazing.

Hi my name is William Harrell. Something you might not know about me is that everybody calls me squid. I have had the nickname squid since second grade. Some people that have known me for three or more years still do not know my real name.

My expectations for this class are not very demanding. I expect to make a B or better grade in this class. I will say that I am not a big fan of reading and writing. That might have to change though because English is reading and writing. I like the group of students that are in the class with me this year, and I think this will be a fun year.

Reading Response 1

      8/15/13

The Knife of Never Letting Go was a book that started out very bad. I hated the book at the beginning, I wanted to stop reading it, but I kept on reading because I had to for summer reading. By the time the book was finished I was glad I kept reading because the book kept getting better as you read.

There were some bad parts or some parts that the author needed to make more clear in the book. One part was when Aaron attacked Todd and Viola, then Aaron got attacked by alligators. Usually when somebody gets attacked by alligators that means that the person died. When Aaron showed up again I was shocked because I though he died. A while after I discovered that Aaron was still alive it made me think, why would the author make someone look like thy died but they didn’t? I realized the author put Aaron’s return in the book so there could be a dramatic twist in the book. The bad part of the book was the ending. I hated the ending so much. My heart was racing, and I was wondering if Viola was going to make it. Then Mayor Prentiss comes out and claims he is the president of the New World, then the book ends. Overall I thought that this book was good and I hope I don’t abandon books any more.
